A Message From Foundation Leadership

Dear friends,

The endowment benefiting UC San Diego provides support to keep our campus community working in the present and looking toward the future. With nearly 1600 unique endowed funds and a total endowment value of nearly $2.4 billion as of June 30, 2022, we are confident that generations of our scholars, faculty, physicians, researchers and staff will continue to discover, create and better our world.

The last quarter of fiscal year 2022 brought significant negative changes to the financial markets, and the markets have been volatile since. This creates difficult challenges for nearly every investor, from individuals to corporations, as well as for non-profits and educational institutions.  In fiscal year 2022 the net annual return for the Foundation and Regents pools were -8.1% and -7.6% respectively. However, the endowment has historically achieved competitive returns in relation to established benchmarks, whether in positive or negative return environments.

The UC San Diego Foundation and The Regents of the University of California manage their endowments with a very long-term perspective and objective for these perpetual funds to achieve real value growth and protection of the purchasing power. We expect volatility in markets over the short term, and we do not attempt to market time the assets in our portfolios. Our long-term focus and asset allocation, coupled with a conservative endowment payout from the corpus annually, provides vital resources for teaching, research, collaboration, health care and public service programs in accordance with donor wishes.

On behalf of the UC San Diego Foundation Board of Trustees, The Regents, and all of our UC San Diego beneficiaries, thank you for your investment in UC San Diego!

Warm wishes,

Marlene Shaver
