R/V Bob and Betty Beyster Endowed Student Research Fund

The student experience onboard a 42‑foot scientific work boat

For decades, scientists at Scripps Institution of Oceanography have conducted fundamental research using a world-class fleet of oceangoing vessels, while teaching our students to understand and protect the planet.

In 2019, exciting opportunities to extend learning beyond the classroom, advance nearshore marine exploration and develop new technologies came together when a new research vessel arrived in San Diego. The R/V Bob and Betty Beyster fills an important niche for research and teaching on a fast and flexible platform. This first-of-its-kind, nationally recognized research vessel was acquired thanks to an outpouring of philanthropic support that raised more than $1.2 million in honor of Mrs. Betty Beyster and the late Dr. J. Robert Beyster.

Access to ship time for students is vital to fostering independent study and practical application of what they learn ashore. On board, students take part in scientific operations previously available only on much larger research ships at a much higher cost. To ensure students have access to the research vessel for years to come, the Beyster family founded the R/V Bob and Betty Beyster Endowed Student Research Fund, connecting boundless undergraduate curiosity with the rich capabilities of the ship.

With the entire Southern California coastal zone now accessible, student research support is helping a new generation to investigate our oceans, Earth and atmosphere in search of solutions to our greatest environmental challenges and a better understanding of our planet.
